As an independent body, supported by leading experts, our accreditation helps everybody to understand what best practice looks like, as well as supporting employers to achieve it.

Becoming an Alcohol Safe Workplace™ is not a quick ‘tick box’ exercise.

In order to achieve and maintain the status, employers need to create sustained behavioural change and demonstrate continuous improvement in reducing stigma and promoting psychological safety for people who are affected by alcohol use issues.

The accreditation sets out 12 standards that need to be met, and all applications are assessed by an independent panel of experts to ensure that accredited employers meet, and sustain, these standards.

WHAT IS AN ALCOHOL SAFE WORKPLACE®?

An Alcohol Safe Workplace® has a culture that includes everybody, whether they are a drinker or not.

People who work in an Alcohol Safe Workplace® feel safe to ask for help if they need it, and receive appropriate support.

WE DON'T HAVE ALCOHOL ISSUES, DO WE?

  • 25% of Gen Zed entering the workforce choose not to drink alcohol

  • An estimated 5% of all workplace absence is alcohol related

  • A 2008 survey found that 32% of employees had attended work with a hangover in the past month

  • One in four drinkers also stated that their drinking meant they did the minimum amount of work possible before going home as early as possible

  • In a 2019 survey, 20% of workers reported drinking more than they wanted to due to pressure from colleagues

  • A further 11% reported feeling pressured into drinking by their boss
